Witnesses To Freedom: Young People Who Fought for Civil Rights

Many young people risked their lives in the civil rights movement. Meet Elizabeth Eckford, who faced a jeering crowd that spit on her as she tried to integrate a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas; fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin, whose role in the Montgomery bus boycott is still remembered by famous civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks; Sheyann Webb, who marched to protest racism, and was met by riot police; and many others. Each young African-American featured here played a pivotal role in a struggle that has not yet been completely won.
