What happens when truth conflicts with the will of the majority? An Enemy of the People explores this question through the story of Dr. Stockmann, who discovers poison in his town's water supply and is ostracized by townsmen unwilling to face the facts. Ibsen's classic theme is as valid now as it ever was, but some of the examples that support it have become antiquated. Arthur Miller, who adapted the play in 1950, has given us a version that makes this vivid, troubling story come as alive for the modern audience as it did in Ibsen's own time.
