Description
In 1959 a young monk named Tsung Tsai escapes the Red Army troops that destroy his monastery and flees alone, starving and hunted, three thousand miles across China. Nearly forty years later, he persuades his American neighbor, maverick poet George Crane, to travel with him back to his birthplace at the edge of the Gobi Desert. Crane seeks freedom, adventure, sensation. Tsung Tsai is determined to find his meditation master's grave and plant the seeds of spiritual renewal in China. Their search takes them from frontier towns, mud villages, and lost temples to a remote mountain cave -- and deep into the heart of zen.
